Beginners guide to gardening: Where to begin

Beginners guide to gardening: Where to begin

Motivation

Are you a beginner who is thinking about bringing some plants in your house to make it look good? Do you want to take up gardening as a hobby and do not know if you should do it? My post might help you to decide for gardening.

Gardening is one of the productive hobbies around. There is nothing more joyful than seeing a seed planted in soil, growing and spreading and bearing flowers and fruits. The additional benefits while spending time with mother nature, with green plants and earth is it is very relaxing. Stresses tend to go away and calmness prevails when you switch to taking care of plants.

Health benefits

Working in a garden also burns a lot of calorie. Gardening is one of those exercises, where you burn calories in small amounts but consistently throughout the whole period of time and is good for people with diabetes and other issues.
Depending on your height, weight and health, simple gardening tasks like pulling weeds, planting flowers can burn between 200-400calories per hour. That is like burning as much calorie as there is in pizza!!

But if you haven’t started gardening yet, how do you start? Where to begin? which plants to buy that will not need too much care or attention? Here is a simple beginners guide to gardening, written based on my experience.

 How to start gardening

Anyway not everyone of us is blessed with wide open stretches where one can landscape and garden. One can utilize a corner of a room, or a balcony to plant some plants and take care of them. In return, they will purify the air in the house, get rid of unwanted flies and create beautiful home décor without spending too much money or additional effort.

You can create a check list about it.

  • Always start small. Indoor plants like palm, cactus, spider plants, succulents like aloe Vera are quite low maintenance and can live through harsh weather and negligence. My first plant was an aloe-vera that lived through months of negligence. I made a blog post about it a few months back and you can read about it here.
  • These plants need less water, watering about once a week in summer and one in ten to twelve days in winter is usually enough.
  • No need for special fertilizer. They have a steady growth rate and additional fertilizers can speed them up. But their growth rate will not be reduced for the lack of it.
  • No stringent sunlight requirements. Unlike flowers or herbs they do not have strong sunlight requirement. They can grow with enough light and do not need constant daylight to thrive.
  • Flowering plants like bromeliad, guzmania are also good as starter plants.
  • Do not repot the plants immediately as they start showing growth. As a rule of thumb a new pot should not be more than 20% bigger than the previous pot. Only when the roots start growing from below the watering holes try to repot them.
  • Once you get used to the cycle of plants and taking care of them, you can try your hand in sensitive flower plants and move into easy herbs like basil and mint.

So what are you waiting for? Grab a small palm from your local plant store and be a plant parent to a super low maintenance plant.
